Of Mandatory Fly-bys

I was seeing a movie where these navy seals carried out a rescue operation and had to go through a terrible ordeal reaching the randevouz point. Y’all have seen the kind. Anyway, and then came halleluyah, the chopper arrived to whisk them away. But first it had to do the mandatory fly-by. So i got wondering, why do the choppers do a fly-by as though they don’t even see the guys waving down on the ground? Why don’t they just swoop down and pick up the good guys? Save some time. Its not like they don’t already know the randevouz point. Do they really have to give them one last chance to get killed?
